Opening General Session

Michael Sandel
What is the Right Thing To Do?

Sunday, October 31 l 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

AAHSA members, whose missions are deeply rooted in ethical standards, face daily emotional and dynamic struggles around preferences, governance, rights, relationships and resources. The aging services field provides a broad arena for dialogue and reasoning at the personal, provider and societal level – a stage for healthy debate, particularly as today’s economy and health care reform create a myriad of unique ethical dilemmas. Having the courage to delve deep into the issues to reach our core values will lead us to a firm foundation upon which to build the future of our field.

Michael Sandel, a New York Times best-selling author, international lecturer and Harvard professor, has taught political philosophy at Harvard since 1980. His Harvard class “Justice,” the most popular class in Harvard history, now reaches a larger audience on TV and online in a 12-part series. Sandel believes the process of thinking through the difficult moral questions of our day—figuring out what we think and why—helps make us better citizens. Join us for our own journey of moral reflection as we tackle several ethical scenarios presented by AAHSA’s Ethics Commission and debated among a diverse group of conference attendees.
